Herman Fritjof Johnson, 98, a long-time Chicago Area folk dancer and leader passed away on the morning of December 12, 2004. Per Herman's wife, Helen Pomerance Johnson, there will be no services.

I will always remember Herman's enthusiasm, kindness and willingness to help. Herman was instrumental in helping me get started as leader, teacher and organizer in the International Folk Dance Community. At he University of Chicago back in 1967, Herman provided me with immeasurable logistical support, encouragement and wisdom and shared many of his life stories with me as we ran the summer folk dance group that met in the parking lot behind Ida Noyes Hall.

Thank you Herman!

If anyone would like to contribute pictures, stories, etc. about Herman F. Johnson, I will setup a webpage memorial for him on the www.EthnicDance.Net website. Somewhere, I believe that I have a film that Charlie and Steve Fawkes gave me that has Herman dancing Austrian Dreysteyrer with Pat Dixon and possibly Beth Fawkes. I will try to get that transferred to a digital format and put it in the website.

Founded in 1937 by Bolshoi Ballet master Igor Moiseyev, this Russian treasure is acclaimed as the world’s greatest folk dance ensemble. With his strong background in classical ballet, Moiseyev sought to establish a unique style for his company that would be dramatic, theatrical, and larger-than-life. Blending ballet with the over 3,000 Russian nationalistic dances, the Company’s repertoire includes dances from Ukraine, Armenia, the Far North and Azerbaijan.
