The event features many folk dance groups from the Milwaukee area. The format is very similar to Milwaukee's Folk Fair (beer garden) in where about a half hour of stage performances are followed by about 45 minutes of open dancing. Each dance group performs about 5 minutes. This alternates throughout the evening (open dance / dance groups / open dance / dance groups, etc... ) Orkestar "Sloboda" will be playing once again for open dancing.

Krunoslav "Kruno" Spisic began his musical training at the age of 10.
His first instrument was of Eastern European descent called the Tambura,
a four tone mandolin from modern day Croatia. Growing up in a Croatian
household, he was exposed to many forms of Tambura music from the Balkans
and its Gypsies. In his teens, Kruno took up the guitar and studied
rock and blues throughout his high school years, honing his technical
prowess and improvisational abilities. It was not until studying Jazz
at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh that Kruno was introduced to Django-style
guitar and began a passionate study of the Gypsy Jazz genre. After graduation,
Kruno started playing the Toronto jazz circuit with the guitar trio
Swing 53, where he gained an extensive repertoire and a more mature
understanding of the gypsy jazz idiom. He has been exposed to a wide
variety of music genres and multicultural experiences. Now a resident
of Philadelphia, Kruno wishes to share his love of "Balkan Gypsy Swing"
with new listeners, and to captivate them with the seductive sounds
of the guitar. http://www.kruno.net
An energetic quintet performing Eastern European gypsy music, Tamburitza Rroma takes the audience on a jubilant journey with their strings and Slavic voices. Born out of the 2001 World Music Festival, Tamburitza Rroma made their debut at HotHouse in May 2002 and have delighted audiences with their fresh approach to traditional folk music ever since. Although Tamburitza Rroma, is based in Chicago, its musical roots and its fan base spread far beyond that city's boundaries. Its repertoire, which includes original as well as folk and modern compositions, is as rich and diverse as the culture of the Gypsy (or the preferred "Rom"), from which it takes its name. At every performance, therefore, Tamburitza Rroma takes its audience on a compelling worldwide journey that stretches from the Balkans to South America, punctuated from start to finish by everything from hushed and haunting ballads to powerful, pulsating Latin rhythms.

Slavic Soul Party! Fiery Gypsy brass, soulful Balkan anthems, and hip-grinding
American funk: Slavic Soul Party! is just what it says. Brash and strong
as slivovitz, these nine musicians have forged a virtuosic new brass
band music in the heart of New York City – melding Gypsy, East European,
Mexican, and Asian immigrant backgrounds with American jazz and soul
– and "developed a reputation for delivering a great time." (NY Times)

Goran Bregovic and His Wedding and Funeral Orchestra in Chicago |
Monday, July 10 6:30pm FREE Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park |
Information: (312) 742-1168, http://www.millenniumpark.org With roots in the Balkans and a head in the 21st Century, Goran Bregovic creates music that marries different sounds - a gypsy brass band with traditional Bulgarian polyphonies, an electric guitar and traditional percussion with a curious rock accent - all against a background of a bedevilled string orchestra and deep sonorities of a male choir. He creates music that our soul recognizes instinctively and the body greets with an irresistible urge to dance. This concert marks the orchestra's U.S. debut. Bregovic was born in Sarajevo of a Serbian mother and a Croatian father. At 16 years old, Bregovic started his first group "The White Button," which lasted fifteen years together. He has composed music for Emir Kusturica's Times of the Gypsies, Underground (Palme d'Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival), and White Cat Black Cat. Bregovic also composed the original soundtrack for Arizona Dream along with rocker Iggy Pop. More information about Goran Bregovic is available at http://www.goranbregovic.co.yu. |
