In exotic Eastern Europe, the roots of World Music go back centuries. Jews, Christians, and Moslems, Rumanians, Ukrainians, and Roma played music together in an atmosphere of sharing, in a multicultural area where professional musicians had to know as many musical styles as the diverse languages of the people with whom they lived and worked. Confidently crossing the border between mature mastery and village madness, Veretski Pass, an ensemble of veteran klezmer artists Cookie Segelstein, Stuart Brotman and Joshua Horowitz, plays Old Country Music; melodies from Medieval Poland, dances from Bessarabia, Ruthenia, and Bukovina, music with origins in the Ottoman Empire, lands once fabled as the borderlands of the East and the West. This virtuosic group of musical eccentrics synthesizes raw energy and polished musicianship to produce music of unusual depth and power, with fire and finesse, warmth and wonder, in a variety of traditional sonorities. A full palette of complementary tone colours pours from expertly played violin, viola, bass viol, button accordion, bass drum, and tsimbl.

The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, regarded as one of the best in Hungary, was established in 1951. Its aims were to collect and play authentic folk music and to preserve the folk dances and traditional costumes of Hungary and Hungarian-inhabited areas by putting them on stage before the public. During the more than four-and-a-half decades of its existence, the Ensemble has achieved its aim by revitalizing the culture of the Hungarian people. Their rich and colourful repertoire entitles the Ensemble to be regarded as one of the top touring groups in the world. The Ensemble has performed in 44 countries across four continents and won the admiration of an audience of more than seven-and-a-half-million people.

This year, the camp features Erik Bendix, an amazingly varied and talented teacher, presenting dances from Romania, Macedonia, Armenia and Asia, and Gayle Armstong, a student of Nelda Drury, showing us some dances from different parts of Mexico.
We're excited to have Orkestar Bez Ime from Minneapolis offer their finest tunes for our Saturday night live music party.
We'll have a Friday afternoon early bird "dance exchange" workshop that will focus on dances from past June Camps. And the usual June Camp traditions -- like "Happy Hour and a Half", the Saturday night Ice Cream Social, and night-owl dancing as late as anyone is cares to dance--- will all be in place. There's even a special commemorative 50th Anniversary T-shirt design you can see on the website.

www.chicagosummerdance.org Live Music by Uszturu Ensemble. USZTURU was founded in 1992 by young Hungarian musicians born in Transylvania and rooted in the communities where Hungarian folk music was still a living tradition. They had witnessed first hand how the region's traditional folk music was disappearing from village life; electronic instruments and Western pop music displacing acoustic instruments and the traditional tunes and dances. The members of the ensemble were able to learn and play with the last of the great masters of Transylvanian music. Through their many years of playing and studying with these folk artists and collecting their music, USZTURU's musicians and dancers have continued to carry on the tradition of Transylvania Hungarian music. The ensemble is also at home in performing other regional Hungarian from the Austrian border to the Eastern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. Performing with the group are Moldovan Horvath Istvan on violin, Major Levente on violin, Szasz Jozsef, on viola and cimbalom, Nagy Zsolt on viola, Szasz Lörinc on bass, singer Nyitrai Marianna and dancers Kis Istvan and Redő Júlia. |

Concert – Trakia Ensemble featuring Yuri Yunakov You may remember the leaders of Trakia Ensemble, Ivo Papzov, Yuri Yunakov and Neshko Neshev, from when they tore the roof off the Old Town School with their Bulgarian Bebop project in 2005. They are back with a new ensemble that performs Slavic and Romani (Gypsy) music from the Balkan countries of Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, and Turkey. Their Bulgarian “wedding music,” originally suppressed by the communist government, is a means of counter-cultural expression and inspires quite the dance party! The TRAKIA Ensemble continues the tradition of the best of Bulgarian Wedding Bands; its repertoire is based on authentic folk songs, tunes and dances from all over Bulgaria, the orchestra is traditional, the music and dance material has been recreated by famous artists who also work with other folk groups. NOTE: For health reasons, Ivo Papazov is not with the group on this tour. Concert at 7pm only – No 10pm show.Concert Tickets from EDC: $17.00/person Information: Old
