The accident took place on a small country road just south of the French town of Niort. The art historians were all at a one week conference in the town of Angers. It's in the Loire area of France to the South East of Paris and North West of the Dordogne. The accident happened at 8:00pm on Thursday, July 27, 2000. He had gone to the region to give a talk about Gothic architecture at the annual conference of the British Archaeological Association. Larry and some art historian friends were traveling in two vehicles. Larry was chatting happily with his friends, Alexandra Kennedy (driving), and John Goodall (front-seat passenger) at the time of the crash. Larry was actually wearing a seat-belt, though tragically this did not stop him from banging his head on the back window of the car. The accident occured on a small French country road, which had been recently gravelled. The other car in front had also skidded at the same point. The car in which Larry was riding skidded off the road and into a ditch. No other cars were involved with this accident. He was unconscious for a time, then woke up and was talking for a while, then lapsed back into unconsiousness and died - of a brain hemorrage. Larry's body was cremated in France and his ashes were shipped to his family. I have heard that there will be a memorial service in Maine on Sunday, September 17, 2000. Larry's obituary appeared in the Milwaukee
Journal-Sentinal on Saturday, August 12, 2000. The article was also
published at the Journal-Sentinal On-Line site: http://www.jsonline.com.
