Melissa Boutell started folk dancing in 1996 during a college class. In January 1997 she joined the NMU international dance club. She began performing with their performance group in Feb. Through the Marquette and NMU dance scene she expanded her dance repertoire to include hula, ballroom, and belly dance. She continued to dance and perform with the NMUID until 2007, when she moved to Grand Rapids.
She introduced several new dances to the local folk dance group, currently on hiatus and began expanding her ballroom dancing to competition and show levels. She aided in the running of a ballroom troupe and assists with a non-profit group for teaching Ballroom and social dance to youth.
At her ballroom Studio, she helps with running music at some parties and arranging music for showcases, performances, and wedding dances. In 2018, she started dancing, teaching, and programming some music for the Kalamazoo Folk Dance group. She has been attending DCFF every year since 1997.
