In the late 1980s, Larry came to North Carolina for a 2-year stint at a think tank in Research Triangle Park.  

He just kind of showed up one day at our Balkan/Scandinavian dance group and proceeded to become a valued member of the group.  A warm fellow, a great dancer.  Of course, we had
no idea of his stature in the folk dance community, we were such a fledgling little group.  

He was just the guy who taught us "Larry's Kopanitsa," a dance he said he learned one time from a fellow workshop attendee while they waited for a bus.  

We were sad for his departure then and we are much sadder for his departure now.
