Remembering Larry Hoey

A friend told me that when she watches very good folk dancers, she sees them transported back into the village.  They just don't dance to the music, they become the dance.  They don't just dance with their feet and arms; they use their whole body.  They immerse themselves in the dance.

These dancers are fascinating to watch, not just because of their talent at dancing, but because you can see their enjoyment in executing their movements with all the styling and flourishes appropriate for the culture, region and time period of the dance.

This is why I loved watching Larry dance.  No matter what Larry was dancing, Balkan, Swing, Hungarian, etc., he put his whole self into it.  I will miss comparing notes and our memories about the old Romanian folk dances from the Gypsy Camp albums.

I will miss watching him dance, dancing with him, and most of all, learning from him!
